Reveal Hidden Surface Flaws with Magnetic Particle Inspection

Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)

Detecting Surface and Near-Surface Defects with Precision

TRAC Energy’s skilled technicians employ Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) as a vital non-destructive testing method for detecting surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials. This technique is particularly effective for identifying fatigue cracks in ageing offshore facilities, crucial for asset lifecycle management.

Our MPI process involves:

  • Magnetising the component using a handheld yoke or bench setup
  • Applying magnetic particles in either dry powder or liquid form
  • Observing particle accumulation around discontinuities to reveal defects.

MPI is especially useful for inspecting welds, structural components, and pressure vessels on offshore platforms. It offers rapid results without the need for extensive surface preparation, making it ideal for in-situ inspections in challenging offshore environments.

By integrating MPI into our comprehensive inspection programmes, TRAC Energy ensures thorough asset integrity assessments, helping our clients make informed decisions about maintenance and repairs to improve operational efficiency and safety.
